In Young's Five Faces of Oppression, Exploitation is presented as oppression through systematically transferring power and resources from one group to another. The exploitation is not only a matter of the transfers themselves, but also a matter of social structures that builds on the exploitation, depends on the exploitation or justifies the exploitation. The same group can be exploited in several ways at once. For example in traditional American culture women are not only expected to support the lives and careers of their husbands, but also confined to jobs that give low status and low pay – yet the men doing their careers would not be able to do so unless these “lesser” jobs were done. (In Swedish: Exploatering)

Interactions

This facet of categorism is an expression of: discrimination, often fueled by bigotry.

It is likely to intersect with facets such as:

As well as with abstractions such as:

  • Dichotomism: Keeping a strict division between the exploiters and the exploited.

Examples of applying this facet to a particular foci of categorism can include:

  • Racism at the individual level: Paying a person of color less wages than you would pay a white person for the same job.
  • Racism at the dogmatic level: A doctrine claiming that the purpose of people of color is to be used by the "aryan race" or any euphemism of that.
