Why care about an issue, considering that other issues also exists? Whataboutism is the art of dismissing any issue such as a focus or expression of categorism by invoking some other issue. Why care about racism when sexism still exists, why care about sexism when homophobia still exists, and why care about homophobia when racism still exists?
Besides being used as a method of defending all and any foci and expressions of categorism, whataboutism can also be used as an expression of categorism in its own right by systematically using it to defend a specific focus of categorism.
